During the summer period, a group of enthusiasts gathered around the Belgrade Backgammon Club is organizing several initiatives aimed at recruiting new members and players. In doing so, the club will continue to promote the values it has cherished from the very beginning: that backgammon, besides being an intellectual challenge, is simultaneously a game of fine manners, entertainment, and one that connects people of different cultures and backgrounds.
With the approval of the BGSS, the Belgrade Backgammon Club will be the organizer of the Belgrade Backgammon Championship (Individual and Doubles) for the next 5 years. This championship aims to further popularize the game and encourage the formation of new clubs within the territory of Belgrade—ideally with new players—and eventually, a Belgrade Club Championship, all under the auspices of the BGSS.
Through careful analysis, we have concluded that such a format is necessary to attract players who lack the time or financial resources to participate in Open tournaments, but who can and want to play one afternoon per week.
The Belgrade Championship is open to all players who are members of the BGSS, regardless of their club affiliation or citizenship.
The Belgrade Championship will be held once a year. For this year, the start is planned for the first week of October, with the idea of running a series of promotional activities until then to attract new players:
- Online campaign
- Promotional tournaments and gatherings for beginners
- Outdoor demonstrations
The Belgrade Championship is designed to be accessible and engaging for competitors of all skill levels, without the need for long-distance travel or high expenses. It is expected to take place twice a month (on Thursdays) starting at 18:30, lasting 2–3 hours per session. Throughout the summer, gatherings will be organized to help new players prepare for the Championship.
Registration for the Belgrade Championship can be completed at www.backgammon.rs, where creating an account is mandatory.
The competition will be conducted in two phases: the group stage and the knockout stage.
Group Stage
The entry fee is 1,000 RSD, and it begins on September 2nd and 3rd at the earliest. It will be played in groups, ensuring that every participant is guaranteed a minimum number of opponents (3–6). Matches will be played once a week at a predetermined time in the presence of referees (unless otherwise permitted by the organizer). The group stage is scheduled to conclude by the end of October at the latest.
Matches will be played to 11 points, and the group format and advancement criteria will depend on the total number of registered players.
The draw will be semi-seeded, ensuring that more experienced players will be group seeds and evenly distributed across the groups. The group draw will be public.
Knockout Stage
The entry fee is 4,000 RSD. It will feature either 16 or 32 players (depending on the total number of registrants) who qualify through the group stage. Matches will be played once a week to 11 points in a best-of-three format, with 2 matches scheduled per day. The prize pool will be distributed among the top 4 players (50% – 30% – 10% – 10%). (20% of the total funds collected will be retained by the organizer, while 80% goes into the prize pool).
The winner of the tournament will receive a trophy and the title of Belgrade Backgammon Champion.
Yours truly,
Belgrade Backgammon Club
